Fill the Gazebo drive aims to curb hunger in Livingston County
The Livingston County Association of REALTORS® and Gleaners Community Food Bank are collecting donatiosn of food and monetaryduring the 13th Annual Fill the Gazebo Food Drive from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015. This food drive is the largest food drive in Livingston County. Over 70 local REALTORS® will be working at several drop-off locations including Kroger and GFS Marketplace in Brighton; Kroger, VG’s and Walmart in Howell; Walmart and Kroger in Hartland; and Kroger in Hamburg. REALTORS® will line the streets in downtown Brighton and Howell to collect monetary donations and food items.
According to Gleaners Community Food Bank, over 1,100 families are served each month at the Shared Harvest Pantry and Gleaners’ Livingston; and 18,000 households struggle financially to cover basic living expenses, 27 percent of all Livingston County households. One in five (21.5 percent) of Livingston County school-age children (nearly 6,000) are eligible for free or reduced-fee school lunch. In 2013, Gleaners distributed 2.5 million meals in Livingston County. Half of the people served are children and seniors.
Suggested items to donate are: tuna, Spaghetti O’s, canned meat, jelly and chunky soup.
The Livingston County Association of REALTORS® goal for the food drive is to collect $15,000 (which will equal 45,000 meals as $1 – 3 meals) and 11,000 pounds of food.
