Governor’s Council gives nod to Fantasy 5K

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized the Fantasy 5K  as a quality physical activity event. As a result, the Fantasy 5K will be included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program.

The Fantasy 5K is part of the Fantasy of Lights celebration in downtown Howell on Friday, Nov. 29. The nighttime run begins at 6 p.m. and is followed by the Fantasy of Lights Parade at 7 p.m. Runners can register for the Fantasy 5K at howellfantasy5K.com.

The Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents. Fantasy 5K exemplifies this core value and is endorsed by the Governor’s Council.

“By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state’s economy.”

“This is the 30th anniversary of the Fantasy of Lights, and we invite you to run in the Fantasy 5K or cheer on the runners before the parade,” said Michelle Tokan, Fantasy of Lights Director.

In order to become an endorsed event, an organization must complete an application form for review. Some criteria that is taken into consideration includes providing a positive, safe physical activity experience using qualified officials and benefiting a nonprofit or charitable organization.
