Tom Cross joins Port Lansing

The wide-ranging aviation experience that Tom Cross is bringing to Capital Region International Airport means that Port Lansing is, both literally and figuratively, in good hands.

Cross, the new director of cargo and global logistics development for the Capital Region Airport Authority, has held a variety of hands-on cargo-moving positions since starting his career as a baggage handler at age 19.

In his new role, he is directly responsible for the marketing and development of domestic and international cargo and logistics operations at Port Lansing, based at Capital Region International Airport.

“We want to help move as much air freight as we can through the airport,” said Cross, who replaces the recently retired Gary Bartek as Port Lansing’s point person for helping mid-Michigan businesses grow internationally.

He oversees Foreign Trade Zone No. 275 and other Port Lansing resources, facilities, property, infrastructure and services that give companies a competitive advantage in today’s global economy.

Cross, who spent his formative years in the Upper Peninsula and Grand Rapids, was most recently manager of cargo services for Kalitta Air at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti.

A commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, he has also served as manager of ground operations for World Airways in Peachtree City, Ga., and station supervisor for AirTran Airways in Milwaukee.

Cross said he is looking forward to working with and hearing from the mid-Michigan business community.
