Two Work Skills Corporation artists finalists in Howell DDA Art Project Competition

WSC Artists Finalists in DDA Art Project

For more than four decades, Work Skills Corporation (WSC) has helped people with disabilities and other barriers find jobs. The process may be different for each individual as it is based on his or her interests and abilities. Artisan Corner, the WSC art program, allows participants to reap the therapeutic benefits of creating art in a multitude of media and take pride in displaying and selling their work for income.
Two WSC artisans recently had their paintings juried into the top 12 of this year’s Howell Art Project, competing against artists from across the state. Their artwork was selected based on their ability, not their disability. After a public vote, Michigan Spring (left), by Matt Sadler, won 2nd Place overall, as well as the “People’s Choice” Award. On the right is Electric Nature, by Matt Salminen, which was also in the top 12. Michelle Acevedo, WSC Art Program Coordinator remarked, “I think I could possibly be the proudest art teacher ever.” Both paintings sold at the August 10th Art Walk and Auction, with 70% of the proceeds going directly to the artists. Reproductions of the top eight art pieces have been installed on the exterior of downtown Howell businesses; Michigan Spring can be seen at First National Bank.
Stop by WSC’s Studio West Gallery in Brighton to see more Artisan Corner items…ceramics, paintings, jewelry and much more. Each sale provides income to the artists! The gallery is located at 111 S. West Street. If you would like to visit WSC for a visit and meet some of their amazing participants, contact Julie at 810.534.6152 or julies@wskills.com.
